How Men Can Prevent Hair Loss

By Scott Mogul

How can men prevent baldness and what baldness solutions for men are available if men do lose their hair? Hair loss in men can be caused by countless factors, including certain medications, dietary deficiencies, stress, use of chemical hair products, and genetics. Some of these things can be stopped, but others can't. For instance, you can make sure you eat a carefully balanced diet to avoid hair loss caused by iron or protein inadequacies, but you can't prevent genetic baldness. You're stuck with your genes.

Tips to Avoid Hair Loss

If you're worried about baldness, there are several things that you can do to help stop it.

- Avoid medications that will cause baldness if at all possible. Sometimes these medicines are mandatory, however. Don't stop taking any medicines without speaking with your doctor first. If hair loss is a concern for you, ask your health practitioner about alternative choices to medicines that often cause hair loss. Some common medicines that may cause alopecia include drugs used to treat cancer, drugs used to treat bipolarity, anti-seizure medicines, blood thinners, drugs used to treat gout, and some blood pressure medicines.
- Eat a carefully balanced diet that includes sufficient protein, iron, zinc, and B vitamins. Most men need about 50 grams of protein daily. If you eat a carefully balanced diet you'll probably get all of the vitamins and minerals you need, but if your diet is less than healthful, taking a daily multi-vitamin may help prevent alopecia due to nutritive issues. Talk to a registered dietician if you have concerns about your diet.
- Learn how to manage your stress. If you need help with this, think about having a meeting with a therapist.
- Limit your use of chemical treatments for your hair, like bleach, straignteners, tints, and permanent waves. If you use chemical treatments for your hair, consider having them done professionally to reduce damage to your hair.

Baldness Information for Men

If you experience alopecia despite efforts to prevent it, there are a few options for treatment. Medications like finasteride (Propecia) and minoxidil (Rogaine) are effective for some men, though these drugs can have undesired side-effects. Surgical hair restoration, or a hair transplant, is an alternative choice. In this process, hair is taken from the back of the head and transplanted to areas of the scalp where hair has been lost. There are some natural hair loss remedies available, too, such as herbal and homeopathic formulas.
